Food Waste App

Pearishbl is an exploratory project aimed at creating a product that would help address the world’s growing food waste epidemic on a personal level.

Work Performed

Research, Architecture, UX, & UI Design

The Problem

With a third of all food produced and sold ending up in trash bins, food waste has become one of the world's leading problems. Although a large amount occurs on farms and in retail, half of the world’s food wasted occurs in our homes.

The Solution

My goal was to create a useful tool that would make users aware of the amount of food waste in their homes, offer ways to decrease that amount, and promote positive change.

UX

When designing the experience, I became the user’s advocate and based every decision regarding the overall journey on the customer’s needs and expectations.

User Research

To identify the users and their food waste habits, I interviewed several friends and family members, asking a series of questions pertaining to their shopping habits and how often they discard expired or unused food items.

From those interviews I was able to create user personas based on real people and their habits.

I focused my attention on the user’s movement through the app, testing, and refining to create seamless and intuitive navigation and screen flow.

UI

When creating the look and feel for Pearishbl, my design goal was to design aesthetically pleasing, minimalistic elements with overall continuity.

Custom Design Library

To achieve visual consistency, building a custom design library to support the app was imperative. Here, I was able to exercise my love for icon design, building color schemes, and creating other important elements and patterns associated with good interface design.

Once these elements were created, I converted them into symbols and compiled a library, making composing other app screens simple and easy.

App Logo Design

The app required a logo that would uniquely identify the brand and visually represent what it stands for. I thought using an actual pear would be a clever way to play on the word “perishable”, creating a visual double entendre.

PEARISHBL

This project was a joy to work on, centered around the user, in hopes of helping them reduce their household food waste.
